American taxpayers expect financial responsibility from our public servants. We also expect respect for the law and accountability when something is rotten in government.
Recently, Gov. Rick Scott ran roughshod over Florida’s public disclosure laws. These “Sunshine Laws” are designed to provide transparency in government to combat corruption and malfeasance. Scott, however, played fast and loose with those laws and ended up owing more than $1.3 million in legal fees and costs to defend himself, then settle the cases without admitting any wrongdoing. But instead of paying those fees and costs out his own pocket, he is using Florida taxpayer money.
