City Hall’s top attorney warned the Jacksonville City Council that intentional violations of Florida’s open government laws carry criminal penalties in a letter sent Wednesday addressing legally questionable communications between council members and a union official, which were revealed by the Florida Times-Union.
The 10-page letter from General Counsel Jason Gabriel follows a series of stories by the Florida Times-Union that found the president of the firefighters union used text messages to relay communications between council members during a meeting last month, which is prohibited by the state’s Sunshine Law.
