Congratulations to First Amendment Foundation board member Carol Marbin Miller and her Miami Herald colleague, Daniel Chang, for being honored with a George Polk award for their “Birth & Betrayal” series. Their reporting exposed the failures and inequities of the Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Association (NICA).
Reporters analyzed NICA records, attended board meetings and administrative hearings to report on how parents had difficulties obtaining basic medical assistance. The reporting led to a legislative overhaul of the program. Parents and disability advocates are now on the NICA board. It is now more difficult to deny services and care.
Again, FAF congratulations Carol and Daniel for their important work holding government officials accountable.
