The Florida Public Service Commission doesn’t get a lot of press coverage, and that suits ’em just fine. It’s a Theater of the Absurd that purports to protect the public while performing like trained seals for utility companies that gouge the public. They don’t much like having knowledgeable people in the audience.
Last week, Florida Power & Light Co. got its panties in a twist when a very knowledgeable reporter, Politico’s Bruce Ritchie, dialed in to a conference call deposition. Ritchie is a veteran newsman with a lengthy record of providing precisely accurate stories about complex regulatory, legal, and environmental matters.
The deposition was being taken in connection with just such a case. FPL has proposed two nuclear power units south of Miami. Environmental groups, and the city of Miami, are heartily concerned. When the stakes are this high, Ritchie is exactly the kind of reporter that ratepayers hope and pray will show up and pay attention. [READ MORE]
