TALLAHASSEE – It wasn’t a pretty process, but Florida now has a new insurance commissioner.
It took three meetings of the governor and Cabinet, sitting as the state Financial Services Commission, to pick David Altmaier, a deputy commissioner in the Office of Insurance Regulation, to replace outgoing Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty.
The final unanimous vote came in a rare emergency Cabinet meeting on Friday, where three members, Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, participated by phone.
