Florida Times-Union journalists were recognized this week for their work during 2016, including detailing former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown’s involvement with a sham charity, reporting on minority and court issues, and reporting on presidential and local elections.
Most of the awards were presented Saturday night in Coral Gables as part of the Sunshine State Awards, an annual competition organized by the Florida Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a national organization “dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.”
The Times-Union competed alongside the largest daily newspapers in Florida including the Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times and Sun Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale.

The Times-Union also competed in the FSNE contest along with the state’s largest newspapers.
FSNE describes its mission as “advancing the cause of repsonsible journalism in Florida.” Along with the First Amendment Foundation, it organizes the Florida observance of Sunshine Week, the annual celebration of open government in the United States. [READ MORE]
