One of the candidates for Broward sheriff was fired from his policing job and signed a settlement agreement that changed the terminology to “resignation.”
The Sun Sentinel obtained a copy of the 2013 settlement agreement, whose terms candidate Edison Jules was prohibited from disclosing. The Village of Obetz, Ohio, paid Jules $215,000, of which $43,000 went to his attorney, Daniel Klos. The settlement required Jules to drop his federal lawsuit alleging race-based discrimination and mistreatment.
Though the agreement says it’s confidential and cannot be released by Jules, it was actually a public record. When we asked the city for it, the city had to provide it. We got a copy of the Jules v. Village of Obetz settlement agreement today.
