Journalists: Don’t procrastinate. Send your entry today! The Naples Press Club is now accepting entries for the 2014 Phil Lewis Prize. The competition is open to print, digital and broadcast journalists working in Florida.
This competition recognizes reporting that makes outstanding use of public records. Special consideration will be given to the creative use of public records, the types of records used, the overall quality of the journalism produced, and the impact of the story on the public. The first place winner will receive a $500 cash prize.
Consideration will be given to market or publication size, obstacles faced, and resources available. To view the contest rules or submit an entry, visit http://www.naplespressclub.org/npc-contest/.
The deadline to submit an entry is September 1, 2014. Entries must be based on work published or broadcast between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Journalists may submit more than one entry if they have multiple topics they would like considered for the prize. The fee for each entry is $15. An entry can be a single story, series or up to 5 stories on a single topic. Contest committee members are ineligible to enter.
Phil Lewis, the award’s namesake, retired in 2013 as executive editor of the Naples Daily News after 35 years at the paper. He served there as a passionate advocate of the public’s right to know, and an aggressive defender of Florida’s public records act, Florida Statute F.S.119.
