“Rising Seas” series takes top prize.
Herald-Tribune reporter Dale White and reporters from three other GateHouse Media newspapers — the Daytona Beach News Journal, the Gainesville Sun and the Northwest Florida Daily News — won the top prize for a series for “Rising Seas” in the Society of Professional Journalsts’ Sunshine State Awards annual contest, among the 10 awards the Herald-Tribune took home.
“Rising Seas,” which was competing against all state newspapers regardless of circulation, is 15 parts so far and has documented threats from climate change in Florida to everything from insurance rates to sea turtle nesting to military bases to historic sites.
Topics editor Lee Williams won first place in the blog writing category for his TheGunwriter.com site, competing against the Poynter Institute’s Ryan Pfeffer and SouthFlorida.com’s Michael Mayo. The blog has previously won recognition from the Florida Society of News Editors.
