Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said he was heeding the community’s call for body cameras when he announced a pilot program this week, but his deputies want to have the last word.
The union representing deputies, the Police Benevolent Association, sent the sheriff a letter Thursday warning him not to roll out body cameras yet.
“We demand the opportunity to meet and bargain over the policy… ,” the letter signed by union President Jeff Marano reads. “Please refrain from assigning any PBA bargaining unit member a camera until such time that the PBA has an opportunity to collectively bargain over the issue.”
Sheriff Israel announced at a budget workshop Tuesday that he intends to have a pilot program of 25 body cameras implemented by year’s end.
He said the community is calling for it.
